Bikes For Tykes

Bikes for Tykes of Fort Worth and Benbrook
Bikes for Tykes of Fort Worth and Benbrook is a not-for-profit effort to recycle and recondition discarded and donated bicycles and parts into safe bicycles for the children of the less fortunate families.

What we need:
• Help in reconditioning bikes: Lots of help is needed, and no experience necessary. If you want to learn bike maintenance, this is a great way to do it!! Phone or email Pete Cox.
• Bikes and bike parts: To donate bikes or bike parts, you can drop them off at your local “Bicycle’s Inc.” store. The store will hold them until a Bikes for Tykes representative picks them up. We definitly have more bikes to fix up then people to do the work.

What we’ve accomplished:
On May 19th. the Fort Worth Independent School District hosted 100 at risk elementary school kids, from 14 different schools, for their participation in the Team Fort Worth Stay in School Initiative. Over the past six weeks, these kids were encouraged to maintain perfect attendance, improve their grades and have no referrals for discipline. Forty of these kids had their names drawn and they were presented with a bike from Bikes for Tykes. Among those present to honor the kids were, FWISD Superintendent Joe Ross, Mayor Mike Moncrief, Chief of Police Ralph Mendoza, FW Fire Chief Charles Gaines and from Bikes for Tykes, Pete Cox. The ceremony was held at the FW Police and Fire Academy. While there the kids all participated in a bicycle safety rodeo, observed a Police Helicopter and mounted units, and the Fire Dept. demonstrated Fire fighting and emergency equipment. The kids were treated to Pizza and soda for lunch and ice cream for dessert.
